Penicillin makes rock music with influences from other styles like metal and ska. Their songs can be heavy, but they also write beautiful ballads. Hakuei’s unique voice makes Penicillin’s music different, unique.
They started as a visual kei band, but like many bands their looks became less extreme over the years.

Formed in 1992, Penicillin's original line-up was Gisho on vocals, Chisato on guitar, and O-Jiro on drums. Later, Hakuei joined the band and took the position as vocalist while GishoShaisuke who would later join Baiser, and held their first live in the year of their formation. By 1993, however, Penicillin's line-up once again had four members and has remained that way to this day.
Their first release was a mini-album that came out in 1994 called Penicillin Shock although by the end of the year, they'd released Missing Link, which was much more successful. Gaining success in the indies scene, they continued working hard well into 1995, releasing two more mini-albums as well as God of grind, which was pretty much Penicillin Shock with a bonus track. In 1996, they released Indwell, a unique album as every track was instrumental. There was a VHS of the same name released which contained a PV for every song off of Indwell featuring the band members.
1998 was a big year for Penicillin; they released two albums, Limelight and Ultimate Velocity, and dropped some of their visual gimmicks. Based on William Shakespeare's famous play, they also performed Hamlet Rock Opera which was released on VHS along with a soundtrack. A year later, they released their first best-of album titled This is Penicillin 1994 ~1999.
The new millennium brought more new releases, including the album Union Jap and a number of singles. Unsurprisingly perhaps, their next album was the simply titled Singles, which contained all of the singles the band had previously released in their career. A DVD sharing the same title was released at the same time containing the PVs. They finished 2001 with another album release, Nuclear Banana, and the Fukai no Suna single.
Although all of the members of Penicillin had been involved in solo projects since 1996, the band has continued to stick together and release at least an album a year to the delight of their fans. 2004 brought fans FLOWER CIRCUS while 2005 saw two different versions of hell bound heart released, one with a DVD containing PVs and one without. In 2006, they released a single in the spring, Tsuki senko teru, before releasing another single in September.
In 2007, Penicillin opened the new year with the release of a new single, Grind Candy and the announcement of a special live held on Valentine's Day to celebrate their 15 years together at the Shibuya O-East. A new album, Blue Heaven, is to be released at the end of February afterwards which the band will go into a short tour. The standing room tour final is to be held at the CLUB QUATTRO in Shibuya.
